Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was first published in the UK in July 1998 by Bloomsbury Publishing. Thanks to the popularity of the first book in the series, it was yet another success and was immediately atop the bestseller lists in the UK. The book was published in the US by Scholastic in June 1999.

In Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter begins his second year at Hogwarts after spending a perfectly horrible summer with his Muggle aunt and uncle. But things aren't much better at Hogwarts when the mysterious "Chamber of Secrets" is re-opened and several students of Muggle backgrounds are found petrified and Harry is the main suspect for many students, thanks to his ability to speak Parseltongue (aka snake language). But his friends stick by him and together, they attempt to find the true Heir of Slytherin who has been opening the Chamber.
